साधना के बगैर जीवन अधूरा होता है। परमानन्द की प्राप्ति से हम वंचित रह जाते हैं। साधन के भी अनेक सोपान है। साधना के पथ पर यदि मनुष्य चले तो उससे जीवन को समझने का सही ज्ञान मिलता है। यह सजग और सचेतन होकर परमात्मा प्राप्ति का अपना मार्ग दृढ कर सकता है। साधक आध्यात्मिक दिव्यता से परिपूर्ण होता है। साधक भोगी नही, योगी होता है। साधक अंर्तमुखी होता है। सबसे पहले वह अपने मन को साधता है। इन्द्रियों पर नियंत्रण रखता है। जीव्न में शांति का मार्ग भी इन्द्रिय नियंत्रण से ही निकलता है। सिकन्दर के भीतर एक राज्य को जीतने के बाद भी दूसरे राज्य को जीतने की कामना बनी रहती थी। साधना से हमारा ऊध्र्व गमन होता है। जीवात्मा उस " गुरु"को प्राप्त कर आनन्द युक्त होती है। गुरु का साक्षात्कार सिर्फ आत्मज्ञान से सम्भव है। और वह एक साधक से ज्यादा भला किसके पास हो सकता है। साधक प्रेम, करुणा और सेवा की भावना से पूर्ण वह शक्ति है जिससे व्यक्ति धीरे धीरे आसक्ति व रसों के मोह को छोडता चला जाता है और एक समय आता है जब वह स्वयं को गुरु के साथ एकीकृत करता है। साधना में व्यक्ति अंदर से मजबूत होता है। धार्मिक बनना सरल है, लेकिन एक सच्चा साधक बनना कठिन।
महात्मा बुद्ध ने करुणा को और महावीर ने अहिंसा को साधा। नानकदेव जी ‘सर्वजन हिताय’ का संकल्प लेकर ख्बुशबू बिखरते रहे। स्वामी रामकृष्ण परमहंस अंतर्मन के सजग प्रहरी थे। साधक सुविधा में नहीं, बल्कि दुविधा में भी सजग व तत्पर रहता है। अच्छा साधक बनने के लिए जीवन में शौर्य , गुरु की शक्ति ,और गुरु का सामर्थ को जरुर साधे। साधना से जीवन में नियम बनता है और जो नियम में रहता है- प्रकृति उसका संरक्षण करती है। ‘एकहि साधै सब सधै’ का भाव रखते हुए जब हम निर्भीक होकर, सबके सुख की कामना करते हुए जीवन-यापन करते है, तभी हम पूर्ण रुप से सफल होते हैं। जो साधक है वह आत्म कल्याण के साथ साथ सर्व कल्याण करता है।
गुरु तो प्रदान करने के लिए हर क्षण तत्पर हैं परन्तु वह स्वयं से कुछ प्रदान कर नहीं सकता जब तक की शिष्य स्वयं आगे बढ़कर अपने आप को समर्पित न कर दे.

गुरु आज के समय में लोग अपनी भौतिक आवश्यकताओं के लिए खोजते हैं ।गुरु उसे बनाना चाहते हैं जो उनके षट्कर्म सिद्ध करा सके ।उन्हें वशीकरण ,मोहन आकर्षण ,अभिचार सिखा सके या खुद कर दे ।अप्सरा ,यक्षिणी ,भूत ,प्रेत सिद्ध करा सके ,सिद्धियां दिला सके ,शक्तिपात कर दे ।भूत ,प्रेत से मुक्ति दिला दे धन सम्पत्ति ,सुंदर पुरुष या कन्या दिला सके ।कुछ दिनों में महाविद्या सिद्ध करा दे मोक्ष अथवा मुक्ति के लिए
अब लाखों में कोई एक गुरु बनाता है या खोजता है पंथों ,संप्रदायों में भी यही स्थिति है तो सामान्य सामाजिक गुरु शिष्यों की तो बात ही क्या ।आज जो अधिकतर गुरु बने बैठे हैं अक्सर वह खुद ऐसे शिष्य रहे हैं ।वास्तव में गुरु का कार्य भौतिक जीवन की समस्याओं में रहकर भी मुक्ति अथवा मोक्ष का मार्ग दिखाना है न की षट्कर्म की सिद्धि कराना ।
